In July 2008, database publisher EBSCO debuted its new EBSCOhost 2.0 database interface. This change affects several of the History databases to which NGL subscribes–such as America: History and Life, Historical Abstracts, Bibliography of Native North Americans, and World History Collection–as well as a variety of databases in other disciplines and multidisciplinary databases which may be used by History students, including Academic Search Complete (SHSU affiliation required to access linked databases).

The new EBSCO interface aims for a cleaner, more modern look and feel.

When available, images related to your search will be displayed along with article results.

Article and image previews will pop up when you roll your cursor over an article citation or thumbnail. (This decreases the need to repeatedly click to open and then back up to the search results list.)

More options are available for narrowing your results after performing a search.

The URLs for specific articles or search results can now be bookmarked in your browser, making it that much easier to get back to the information you’ve discovered.

The “Image Quick View” feature includes previews of images, charts, and maps from many articles in the search results list.

More details on new features, as well as FAQs and User’s Guides, can be found on EBSCO’s website at http://support.ebsco.com/ebscohost2/faqs.php.

Interested faculty and students can register to attend a library workshop on Research Databases in History, which will touch on the new EBSCO interface, among other topics (database workshops are available in a variety of other disciplines as well). History faculty can also schedule a library instruction session for a class by contacting the History Bibliographer at the NGL.

The following work was recently added to the NGL collection: Loomba, Ania, and Jonathan Burton, eds. Race in Early Modern England: A Documentary Companion. New York: Palgrave MacMillan, 2007. (NGL call number: DA125 .A1 R27 2007.)

This book brings together a unique collection of primary-source documents related to 16th- and 17th-century English thoughts and practices on the subject of race. It is not limited to works published in this period, but embraces as well many earlier works which informed the philosophies of the time, including numerous classical Greco-Roman texts, Biblical scripture, and medieval works. Each document is preceded by a brief statement providing background such as the identity of the author; the context of the document’s creation; some central or unique themes or arguments in the document; and the historical significance of the document. Subject keywords are also assigned to each document, but the book does not provide an appropriate index to discover related documents according to these terms. An appendix of excerpts from several early modern dictionaries helps to define some terms and usage. The introduction provides a background to the subject of “race,” touching on topics such as colonialism, slavery, religion, class, and sexuality. A general keyword index is included.

If you are researching a particular period of history in a particular geographic area — say, 19th century United States, or 15th century Europe — the SamCat online catalog allows you to quickly browse the primary subject areas available for that time and place. This could be a good way to start considering broad subject ideas (if perhaps you’re a student trying to find a paper topic) or to quickly determine how much material the library in support of a given topic (if perhaps you’re a professor developing a class assignment).

From anywhere on the library’s website, click “Search the Catalog” in the main menu. On the main catalog search page, click “Browse” inside the small box on the right side. Type your search in like this…

format: Place History Period
example: United States History 19th Century
example: Europe History 15th Century

…and then click the button labeled “subject.”

What you get in return is not a list of books, but a list of more specific subject headings. You can use the “Previous” and “Next” links in the blue menu bar to browse through the alphabetical pages of subject headings.

So, for instance, under “United States History 19th Century,” you will discover more specific headings such as “United States History 19th Century. Abolitionists,” “…Black power,” “…Education,” and “…Medicine” (to name only a very few).

The number that appears to the right of each subject heading indicates the number of items in the library’s collection on that topic. Clicking on a subject heading will take you to the list of books on that topic.
